Description
All rights reserved to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. I have been given permission by their Marketing Director Pam Gilbert to post a couple of my illustrations online so I may share with my followers. Official press release and book signing with the author and I is set for December 11th.
The story is about the two lobby dogs, Bixby and Gibbs, 'escaping' the lobby for a short time so they can explore the grounds and have a bit of fun before returning to their duty greeting guests who arrive at the resort.
Fun story about how I got chosen to be the illustrator of this book. I was self employed (part time) for a while doing House Portraits for a realtor office when my Dad saw an add for a job fair for 'Christmas at the Princess.' I had nothing better to do so I went and interviewed at the resort. I interviewed with one of the managers, Adam, then straight after the Head of Retail, Teresa, joined us and we got a good conversation going. Since I always carry my resume in my portfolio they asked to see my art too. They were impressed! Later I was told that the Director of Operations, Gerard Mauvis, would talk to me for a minute to close up the interview. In walks James Bond (I'm not kidding this guy could easily play the role all suave and debonair), Mr. Mauvis sits down and says: "Well I don't normally talk to interviewees unless we are going to hire them."
Looking back and forth between the manager and Mr. Mauvis a few times it clicked. I got the job! I would be the Hostess for the Firepits next to the Ice Rink. Hearing about my portfolio Mr. Mauvis asked to see it, I showed him, and he politely asked to take some photos for his son (one of my pictures was of a Jedi, his son loves Star Wars). Shook hands and that was that.
Or so I thought. The next day I get a phone call from Teresa and she asked me "How do you feel about illustrating a children's book?" Of course I jumped saying I would love to! Turns out, the morning after the interview the ones who interviewed me, Adam, Teresa, and Mr. Mauvis were in a staff meeting with the rest of the big-wigs of the resort discussing the new hires as well as talking about the Children's Book they were going to do. They already had five artists interested in illustrating it, then Teresa said "Hey we actually just hired an artist" then pointed at Mr. Mauvis "Didn't you take some pictures? Can you show everyone?" He did. The peeps liked it. Then they asked me to submit a piece to see if I was the one they wanted to go with. (See illustration above) They loved it! Especially the happy pup's expressions! And end of story, I got to be the illustrator!
